Colic

As you are reading this you might be bouncing your baby, doing squats, swaddling, crying or just switching to a new formula. You have tried noise machines, bouncing, shhhhing, and medications with countless waking hours of crying. You just want to help your little one, get some sleep, and have just a bit of peace in your life.

Cause?
Infantile colic was first thought to be caused by indigestion. It is now defined as, “unexplainable and uncontrollable crying in babies from 0 to 3 months old, more than 3 hours a day, more than 3 days a week for 3 weeks or more, usually in the afternoon and evening hours.” Research is non-conclusive in the root cause of colic.

Some Research
A research article published in 1999 in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiologic Therapeutics in a randomized controlled trial had a small group of 50 infants who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for infantile colic. One group was treated with adjustments for 2 weeks and the other with the drug dimethicone for 2 weeks. The results showed spinal manipulation (adjustments) reduced crying by 67% and the drug therapy saw a 38% reduction.

Chiro Care: Chiropractic care helps to reduce nerve stress and restore normal function. Chiropractic is not a treatment for colic. The nerves that regulate, control, and supply the body start at the brainstem, travel down the spinal cord, and exit out between two vertebrae. When we take the stress off the nervous system, the body functions better. When the body is balanced and working properly, colic most likely not occur.
